No dedicated servers or PB in Modern Warfare 2

IW's own FourZeroTwo has commented that Modern Warfare 2 will not have dedicated servers or PunkBuster.

* We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.* There is no delay for the PC version of MW2

* Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.

* You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.

* This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is easily one of the most anticipated games of the year, but news that a cherished feature has been dropped from the game has fans up in arms.

The storm's epicenter is squarely over the PC version of the game. Past Call of Duty games (together with Modern Warfare 2's smash hit predecessor) have allowed players to set up multiplayer servers that remain open constantly, letting players connect and disconnect as they wish. They're ideal gathering places for enthusiasts and game tweakers, and perfect for organized tournaments -- except Modern Warfare 2 won't support them.

Playing together online will be a potentially less intimate affair.

"We're just prioritizing the player experience above the modders and the hardcore," said developer Jason West to Game Informer. West wants PC players to use the game's automated matchmaking service instead, and characterizes dedicated server communities as insular, packed with cheaters, and unfair to new players.

Over 140,000 fans (at the time of writing) disagree. "My favorite part about PC [first-person shooters] (aside from the controls) is the community that spawns and grows around a server for a game," said one commenter on gaming blog Joystiq. "Usually when I get involved in a PC FPS online I find a couple good servers and play them hard. After a while you get to know the people on there, get involved in the forums, etc. Matchmaking has its place, but dedicated servers have a bigger place."

Can they have both? Apparently not: West doesn't want to "bifurcate the community". Although it's not out of the question that Call of Duty's developer, Infinity Ward, will cave, it's looking like a done deal, and that's enough to have some fans canceling their preorders and resolving to skip the game altogether.

It's a tough choice. On the one hand, the slick experience of automatic matchmaking, where you're dropped into a game that -- hopefully -- suits your skill level and connection quality. On the other, a dedicated community that's legitimately distraught at losing one of its major organizational tools. Will it be enough to turn you away from the game?

PC has no common provider of matchmaking like on xbox360, so to have match making on the PC we had to create IW.Net, kind of similar to the match making networks created for RTS games on PC. This was not a trivial undertaking, although it's understandable that these days consumers may take match match making for granted.

The max number of players on all platforms are 1v1 through 9v9. This is the number of players we focused on when we were balancing map size, perks, classes, challenges, etc.

Well none of the programmers are in the chat today.. so let's just say it's crazy programmer magic. It's a lot more than just K/D though. The important thing is not that all players in a game are the exact same skill, but that the teams are balanced.

The inspiration behind so many inclusions to MW2's MP was basically the fun factor. We'll look at something we did in the past and say "Wouldn't it be fun if we *insert blank here*". With MW2 we had the chance to do a lot of just that. We implemented things that at first were very experimental and unbalanced, but through time and hours and weeks of testing and balancing, we came out with something amazing.

Looks like a DIRECT console port. Dedicated servers won't save this game now.
